Hugh Cook AM, MBBS, FRAC GP, FRAH ZCP is a retired Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with a lifelong interest in the complexities and ethics of the doctor patient relationship. He is a Life Member of MIFWA having been President in the early 2000’s. He is also a Life Member of the Autism Association of WA.
Over the years Hugh has had a range of clinical and administrative responsibilities but sees himself as a Clinician rather than an Administrator. Clinical education has been an ongoing responsibility and his first administrative responsibility after many years in general practice was as the first Director of the family medicine programme in 1973. He became the Director of the State Child and Adolscent Mental Health Service in 1988 and chaired of the states Suicide Prevention Committee for Autism, and from 1997 was a Psychiatrist member of the Mental Health Review Board/Mental Health Tribunal.
He hopes that his experience with the complexities of risk assessment and consent capacity will be of help to the MIFWA Board. His work as a Family Therapist may help in our understanding of the support needs of people with mental illness and their families.
