NAIDOC Week at MIFWA: A Canvas of Culture, Connection and Learning

For NAIDOC Week this year, the MIFWA Reconciliation Action Working Group welcomed local Noongar artist Sarah Weston to lead an art workshop for staff at our head office in Midland.

Staff were invited to drop in throughout the morning of Wednesday 8 July to contribute to a collaborative large-scale canvas, which is now proudly displayed at our head office in Midland.

Learning from an Aboriginal artist was an opportunity to engage with one of the world’s oldest continuing cultural traditions while gaining insight into the stories, knowledge and cultural significance that are often expressed through art.

It also provided a meaningful way to build our team’s understanding and respect as MIFWA continues to strengthen our connection with Aboriginal culture and First Nations communities.

It was wonderful and exciting to see so many people take part, with some also choosing to create their own individual artworks. Everyone also enjoyed a shared lunch.

Here’s what one of our team members had to say about their experience:

“Attending the NAIDOC activity was so much fun! Being able to bring my Noongar grandson to the office to do some artwork was awesome and something that he was so excited to share with his parents. The facilitators were so helpful, relaxed and friendly! It was an amazing morning.”
