Looking out for friends is something teenagers do every day — but sometimes it’s hard to know what to say or do if someone is going through a tough time. The Teen Mental Health First Aid course gives young people the knowledge and confidence to support their peers, while also learning how to look after their own wellbeing.
This practical, engaging mental health training is designed specifically for students in Years 7–12. It teaches them how to recognise when a friend might be struggling, how to start a supportive conversation, and when to get help from a trusted adult.
Why Teen Mental Health training matters
- Mental health challenges often begin during the teenage years.
- Friends are usually the first to notice when something isn’t right.
- With the right mental health training, teens can play a powerful role in supporting each other while knowing when to involve an adult.
This course empowers young people to help a friend in need while keeping themselves safe. It’s about building resilience, reducing stigma, and creating supportive school communities.
What teens will learn
Through this mental health training, students will:
- Understand more about common mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and substance use.
- Learn how to approach a friend, start the conversation, and listen without judgement.
- Know when it’s time to involve a trusted adult, teacher, or health professional.
- Explore self-care strategies to look after their own mental health.
