What is an assistance animal?
An assistance animal must be approved, certified or registered under the right rules.
Pets can be very important to people, but they are not assistance animals unless they meet the legal requirements.
Assistance animals can support independence, confidence and community participation.
Dogs are the most common assistance animals.
How does MIFWA support assistance animals?
MIFWA recognises the value of assistance animals.
We support consumers to meet legal and community responsibilities for their animal.
We also have a duty to keep workers, consumers and visitors safe.
What may MIFWA discuss with you?
We may talk with you about:
- whether the animal is certified or approved
- how the animal is identified in public
- how the animal will be safely transported
- whether the animal is healthy and well cared for
- any risks or support needs
Respecting assistance animals
An assistance animal may be working.
People should not pat or distract an assistance animal without permission.
Concerns about safety or animal welfare should be discussed respectfully.
