What does choice and control mean?

Choice and control means having a say in decisions that affect your life.

It means making choices about your support and services.

It also means getting information and support so you can make decisions that are right for you.

How does MIFWA support your choices?

We will:

  • give you information so you can make informed choices
  • support you to make your own decisions
  • listen to what is important to you
  • record your preferences
  • support you to build confidence and independence
  • help you stay connected with other people, services and your community

Information to help you choose

We will give you information at different times during your service.

This may be when you start services, while you are receiving support, or when your services are ending.

If information is difficult to understand, we will try to explain it in a way that works for you.

What choices can you make?

You may be able to make choices about:

  • the days and times your support is provided
  • who supports you, where possible
  • how often support is provided
  • how support is provided to meet your needs
  • your goals and priorities
  • your culture, communication and personal needs
  • changes to your services
  • leaving a service

What if there are limits to my choices?

We will try to support your choices wherever possible.

Sometimes there may be limits because of funding, service requirements or program rules.

If this happens, we will explain your options and talk with you about what is possible.

Need help making decisions?

We can support you to make decisions in different ways.

This may include:

  • explaining information
  • providing information in different formats
  • helping you understand your options
  • helping you access an advocate or support person
  • arranging communication support where possible

What are preferences?

Preferences are the things that matter to you.

Your preferences may include how, when or where you would like support to happen.

We will record your preferences so workers understand what is important to you.

Your voice matters

You can ask questions if you do not understand something.

You can tell us what support works best for you.

You can ask for information in a way that is easier for you to understand.

Questions, feedback or concerns

If you are worried, you can tell us.

You can:

  • ask a question
  • give feedback
  • tell us about a concern
  • ask someone you trust to help you

We will listen to you and respond respectfully.
