Diabetes Support at MIFWA – Easy Read

What is this page about?

This page explains how MIFWA may support consumers who live with diabetes.

It explains what MIFWA workers can and cannot do.

What is MIFWA’s role?

MIFWA provides support with everyday activities.

MIFWA workers are not doctors, nurses or diabetes specialists.

Your diabetes care is your responsibility and the responsibility of your health professionals.

How can MIFWA workers support me?

A worker may be able to help you:

  • remember your daily routines
  • buy diabetes supplies
  • organise diabetes supplies
  • attend health appointments
  • make phone calls about your health
  • contact your nominated support person if needed.

This support must be agreed with you.

What can’t MIFWA workers do?

  • MIFWA workers can’t give medical advice
  • MIFWA workers can’t give dietary advice
  • MIFWA workers can’t tell you what to eat
  • MIFWA workers can’t tell you how much to eat
  • MIFWA workers can’t test your blood glucose levels
  • MIFWA workers can’t give insulin
  • MIFWA workers can’t handle diabetes medication
  • MIFWA workers can’t use diabetes monitoring equipment
  • MIFWA workers can’t make decisions about your diabetes care

Consent and privacy

MIFWA should explain what support will be provided and what will not be provided.

You can choose what information you want to share.

We will only share your information when:

  • you agree
  • the law requires us to
  • there is a serious and immediate safety risk.

What happens in an emergency?

If a worker thinks you are not safe, they may call an ambulance or other emergency services.
