Epilepsy and Seizure Support at MIFWA – Easy Read
What is this page about?
This page explains how MIFWA may support consumers who experience epilepsy or seizures.
It explains what MIFWA workers can and cannot do.
What is MIFWA’s role?
- MIFWA provides support with everyday activities.
- MIFWA workers are not doctors, nurses or epilepsy specialists.
- Your epilepsy or seizure care is your responsibility and the responsibility of your health professionals.
- MIFWA workers may help you stay safe if a seizure happens during support.
How can MIFWA workers support me?
- A worker may be able to help you follow your usual routines.
- A worker may help you attend health appointments.
- A worker may help you make phone calls about your health.
- A worker may follow your epilepsy or seizure support plan if you have one.
- A worker may support your safety if a seizure happens.
- A worker may contact your nominated support person if needed.
This support must be agreed with you.
What can’t MIFWA workers do?
- MIFWA workers can’t give medical advice.
- MIFWA workers can’t diagnose epilepsy or seizures.
- MIFWA workers can’t decide the type of seizure or treatment.
- MIFWA workers can’t give, change or manage medication.
- MIFWA workers can’t create or change clinical management plans.
- MIFWA workers can’t restrain you.
- MIFWA workers can’t put anything in your mouth during a seizure.
Consent and privacy
- MIFWA should explain what support will be provided and what will not be provided.
- You can choose what information you want to share.
- MIFWA may record information if a seizure happens during support.
- MIFWA may discuss emergency support with you before support starts.
We will only share your information when you agree, the law requires us to, or there is a serious and immediate safety risk.
What happens if a seizure happens?
- Workers should stay calm.
- Workers should stay with you if it is safe to do so.
- Workers should help protect you from injury.
- Workers should respect your privacy and dignity.
- Workers should follow your support plan if you have one.
- Workers must not provide medical treatment.
What happens in an emergency?
If a worker thinks you are not safe, they may call an ambulance or other emergency services.
If there is an emergency, call 000.
